Rameswaram Municipality is located at Rameswaram Island with town area of 53 sq km. The government corporation is the major revenue division and head quarters of Rameswaram Taluk. It is important to know that the town generates great income from fishing and tourism sector. Rameswaram is a 3rd grade municipality with 21 wards in which 6 wards are reserved for women and 1 reserved for SC. The Municipality has divided the departments into six divisions such as General, Revenue, Engineering, Town Planning, Public Health and IT Wing. All the departments are controlled and maintained by Municipal Commissioner who is the chief executive head of the Corporation. The Rameswaram Municipality is striving hard to increase the income and standard of living of the people. Various schemes have been implemented by the Municipality Board that include Poverty Eradication Programme (SJSRY), 12 Finance Commission, Road Development Scheme, MP/MLA Schemes and much more.

As per the records of 2011 census, Rameswaram holds a total population of 44,856. Total number of households is counted to 10579 and the average literacy of the town is calculated to 73.6%. The administration is headed and guided by 21 members (i.e) one member each from 21 wards.
