Rameswaram is one of the famous religious destinations located in the state of Tamil Nadu. Situated in the Ramanathapuram district, Rameswaram features an arid weather with a considerable extent of humidity. In 2004, Rameswaram was declared as municipality by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Rameswaram Administration Rameswaram Municipality is located at Rameswaram Island with town area of 53 sq km. The government corporation is the major revenue division and head quarters of Rameswaram Taluk. It is important to know that the town generates great income from fishing and tourism sector. Rameswaram is a 3rd grade municipality with 21 wards in which 6 wards are reserved for women and 1 reserved for SC. The Municipality has divided the departments into six divisions such as General, Revenue, Engineering, Town Planning, Public Health and IT Wing.

All the departments are controlled and maintained by Municipal Commissioner who is the chief executive head of the Corporation. The Rameswaram Municipality is striving hard to increase the income and standard of living of the people. Various schemes have been implemented by the Municipality Board that include Poverty Eradication Programme (SJSRY), 12 Finance Commission, Road Development Scheme, MP/MLA Schemes and much more.

Administration of Rameswaram Municipality

As per the records of 2011 census, Rameswaram holds a total population of 44,856. Total number of households is counted to 10579 and the average literacy of the town is calculated to 73.6%.  The administration is headed and guided by 21 members (i.e) one member each from 21 wards. Further, the Chairperson looks over the major activities of the city and the Deputy Chairperson acts as a supporting authority to the board.

E-Governance in Rameswaram

Rameswaram Municipality  In order to offer effective support for the people, the Rameswaram municipality has incorporated the “E-Governance” method in the city. This online system is mainly initialized to help out the citizens by providing essential information regarding the town. E-Governance enables the people to pay the bills & taxes, getting certificates and approval, important documents and much more. Some of the important features of Rameswaram municipality E-Governance system include online dues payment, water taxes, property tax, professional taxes, non tax, birth certificate, death certificate, trade license, building plan approval, complaint registration, application downloads and so on.

Being a part of Ramanathapuram assembly constituency, Rameswaram holds election once in five year for Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Dr. M.H. Jawahirullah of Manithaneya Makkal Katchi in alliance of ADMK is the present MLA of Rameswaram. He has won in the election conducted in the year of 2011. Currently, J.K.Riteesh from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is the M.P for the Ramanathapuram Assembly Constituency.

    Blaring sound through loudspeaker of boat ferry is continuously disturbing from 6 am to 9 pm. I have come making great efforts to visit Rameshwaram. I am staying in TTDC hotel Tamil Nadu. This continuously blaring sound is an utter nuisance. Two speakers near Hotel and two near bus stand. Pl take necessary action.

    I VISITED RAMESHVARAM IN LAST MARCH, AND I WAS SHOCKED BY SEEING GOATS ARE WONDERING AND MAKING PLACE DIRTY AT THE RAMESHVAR TEMPLE. IF YOU WANT I CAN SEND YOU PICTURES OF THESE GOATS. THIS WAS DIRTIEST TEMPLE AREA I HAVE EVER SEEN. IT IS SHAMEFUL TO SEE THAT ONE OF THE HOLIEST 12 JYOTIRLINGAMS IN THIS KIND OF ENVIRONMENT. THE RAMESHVARAM MUNICIPALITY NEED TO CLEAN UP THIS HOLY AREA FROM THIS KIND OF NUISANCE. PEOPLE COME FROM AROUND THE WORLD FOR THE DARSHAN OF THE SHIV LINGAM. I HOPE MY CONCERN AND CONCERN OF OTHER CITIZEN MUNICIPALITY WILL TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION REGARDING THIS MATTER.THANKS. RAMESH AMIN

    Sir , on the part of my job , my official visit to rameswaram with my own car , at Pamban bridge ,the toll gate they are collected sixty rupees ( 60 ) , but in the toll collection board only 9 rs is mentioned , when I reminding this discrepancy they r simply avoid me and treat me as dirt , moreover when I reached Rameswaram another collection toll , when I am showing the sixty rupees ticket , they r asking me to pay another hundred rupees (100) for municipality entrance fee , we feel at Rameswaram other state vehicle is targeted by these type of robbery ,, I am humbly request you , what is the exact cost for these places visits

    I agree with your post. It is true that some people without any identity cards collect 100 rs as toll fee in Rameswaram. Please take ncessary action. Also these guys behave very rudely to visiting tourists. We may have to take this up to all India tourism board if any such behaviour is not properly addressed and these guys are not warned against such bad behaviour.
