One Day Trip in Rameswaram

Tourism in RameswaramRameswaram, also known as the Varanasi of the South is a famous religious town in Tamil Nadu. This city has close connection with the life of Sri Rama. It is believed that the trip to Rameswaram would free the people from their sins and solve all the problems in their life. Being the popular tourist destination, Rameswaram has a large number of ancient monuments, temples, religious places, scenic tourist spots and much more. If you are plannning to take a one day trip in Rameswaram for your hectic schedule, the following itinerary could help you.

Itinerary of Rameswaram

Tourists should ensure to reach the destination by mid night or early morning. Local buses, taxis and cabs are available for the travelers at any time. People can just take a bus or taxi and reach their hotel. It is advised to select a hotel near the railway station or bus stop, to ensure that you do not lose time in commuting from your hotel to the tourist places.

Start at 5.15 AM

Temples in RameswaramStart your tour at 5.15 in the morning and walk towards the sea. It takes only 5 minutes to reach the sea from any of the lodges in Rameswaram near the temple. It is believed that the sea is free from strong waves and the people can try swimming in the early morning.  Further, the people can also perform rituals (thithi) for their ancestors. Spend around 40 minutes in the sea and enter Ramanathaswamy Temple. If you prefer, you can dip your head in Twenty Two Tirthas from 22 wells considered as holy water.

7.00 -8.30 AM

Return to the hotel to freshen up and after taking your breakfast visit Agnitheertham, an amazing sea shore, Ramar Padam (Rama’s Feet), and Gandamadana Parvatham. Gandamadana is a hillock situated at a distance of just 3 km from the main temple. You can easily reach the place by catching a bus, cab or taxi available in the city. This is considered to be the tallest spot in Rameswaram and people can view the entire beauty of the sea from this point. Near the hillock, there are number of temples and historical monuments to visit. Don’t forget to visit Sita Theertham and Laxman Theertham located in the city.

12.00 Noon

Return to the hotel to have lunch and relax for a while.

2.00 PM

Get ready to visit Dhanushkodi Beach which lies at a distance of 18 km from the main temple. Buses are available for the travelers to reach the destination in short frequency. The city is popularly known as ghost city after its damage caused by the cyclone in the year of 1964. In Dhanushkodi Beach, you will be able to visit some of the old temples and the remnants of the churches. The beach is one of the best tourist spots to relax in the lap of sands. On your way you can visit Jada Theertham and Nambu Nayagiamman Temple. People who are looking for a comfortable travel can select the tourist cabs instead of buses. OIone is not allowed to visit or stay in Dhanushkodi at night.

6. 30 PM

Once in the hotel room in the evening you can refresh yourself with a  cup of tea and coffee accompanied by snacks. You can visit the main temple for evening Dharshan and spend some time there. If you have time, you can shop for some some artefacts and local handicraft items.
